Barbados Surfing Association Newsletter #4 May. 7, 2007

The Barbados Surfing Association sent a full team of twelve (12) Junior surfers to compete at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Costa De Caparica, Portugal from May 4th -13th, 2007.

They fought hard - but the conditions were difficult with very cold water and small surf. Team Barbados finished 20th out of the 28 countries that took place in the event. Elvis Carter our top judge who also traveled with the team had the distinction of judging both the Under 18 Girls final and the Under 18 Boys final.

Although we did not improve on our ranking as we had hoped for, the experience gained by the team will certainly go a long way on improving their surfing skills and has also highlighted the weak points that we would need to improve on for next years event, which will take place either in France or Costa Rica, more on this as we get it.

A special thanks to the management team of Rachel Roett, Peter Corbin and Andrew Lewis as well as all those who helped in the fundraising that helped to offset the large expense that an undertaking of this size required.

Our next overseas event is the Pan American Surfing Games, which will take place in Iquique, Chile from November 3rd - 12th. The team comprises 4 open surfers, 4 juniors, 2 ladies, 2 long boarders, 2 male body boarders, 1 female body boarder and management. As stated in an earlier newsletter, the team will be selected after the 5th and final SOTY event.

Our next local event is slated for June 30th - July1st at Parlour. Please be reminded that our contests start at 8:00 a.m. Entries close at 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the contest. Entrance fees are $25 for the first division and $15 for each additional division. Providing there is space in the required division, you may enter after the 7:30 am deadline but you must pay a late entry fee of $25 for each division entered. No pre- entries will be accepted by telephone. You may however pre-enter by registering and paying entry fees to Mrs. Margot Tuach or Mrs. Rachel Roett.

We have decided to put on hold the Grommets event slated for June 2nd. This will now take place sometime in summer after the coaching program, which will run from July 8th -15th and will be conducted by Marcos Conde from Brazil. The cost this year for an individual is $300 for the week; any family with more than 2 participants will get a 10% discount. Please register as early as possible.

Remember that our Reef Bowl event has been rescheduled for the weekend of November 16th - 18th so mark your Calendars, as you won't want to miss what promises to be our biggest and best event. Registration forms will be posted on our web site soon so be sure and register before November 3rd since any entries after this date will be subject to availability of space. The event this year also has the added attraction of having a sanction from the ASP as a 1-Star WQS event and a 6-Star ALAS event.

Our Annual row for charity will be taking place at Harbour Lights on June 17th. Any person who is interested in being on the BSA Team is asked to contact Rachel, Andrew or Jason.

Keep safe and keep surfing until next time!!!
