STEFAN CORBIN MAKES BIG SPLASH AT NATIONAL SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS Oct. 1, 2007

Stefan Corbin took top honours in the Open and Under-18 Junior Boys’ Divisions at the Lazy Days National Surfing Championships held at the Soup Bowl, Bathsheba September 15 - 16. The Divisions contested were the Open, Junior Under 18 Boys, Under 12 Juniors, Ladies, Under 18 Girls, Masters (over 35 years), Bodyboard and Longboard.

Conditions were fair with waves in the 3 - 4 ft range allowing Stefan to showcase his skill in the Open Division as he executed radical, controlled maneuvers to win from Christopher Clarke who was second, Adrian Small third and Barry Banfield fourth.

Lewis St. John was second to Stefan in the Under 18 Junior Boys Division while Jordan Heaselgrave was third and Matthew Kieffer fourth. Lewis won the Under 16 Boys’ Division while an injured Bruce Mackie was second, Matthew Kieffer third and Jordan Heaselgrave fourth.

The Ladies’ Division was won by veteran Melanie Pitcher while Ametza Nicholls was second, Chelsea Roett third and Chelsea Tuach fourth. Ametza won the Under-18 girls while Chelsea Roett was second, Chelsea Tuach third and Alyssa Fernandes fourth.

In the Under 12 Junior Division, Chelsea Tuach placed first from an all male onslaught beating Gavin Fernandes second, Joshua Burke third and Mathew Roach fourth.

In the Masters event, Stewart Stoute was first while Brian Gooding was second, Andrew Rapson third and Wayne Roett fourth. In the Longboard Division, Alan Burke fought off a strong challenge from Stewart Stoute who placed second, while Barry Banfield was third and Nicholas Donawa fourth.

The Bodyboard Division was won by Ian Jarvis while Jason Kistoo was second. Many thanks to Bill and Annie for once again sponsoring our National Surfing Championships. Thanks also to our Contest Director, Andrew Lewis, our judges Elvis Carter, Peter Corbin, Margot Tuach, Nicholas Donawa and Eneko Nicholls and our faithful Tabulator, Heather Kieffer for their sterling service over the two (2) days.

The Lazy Days National Surfing Championships was the final event before the Team for the Pan American Games was selected. The surfers selected (based on points standings) for each Division were contacted and based on availability the Team travelling to Iquique, Chile is as follows: Open – Christopher Clarke and David Hoad; Junior Boys – Stefan Corbin and Jordan Heaselgrave; Ladies – Chelsea Tuach; Longboard – Nicholas Donawa; Bodyboard – Jason Kistoo. The Management comprises Margot Tuach (Manager), Jason Kistoo (Assistant Manager) and Nicholas Donawa (Coach). The Team has begun training and will be travelling November 2nd to 13th.

Two exciting fund-raising events have been planned to raise funds for this trip. On October 13th we will be having a "Bajan Luau" at Harbour Lights featuring the popular Roadhouse Band and “Unknown Fire”. Doors open at 9:00 pm. and there will be a donation at the door of Bds$20.00. Dress code is “Surfer Style” (howly shirts, swimsuits and beach wraps, baggies, even grass skirts and coco nut bras are allowed!) Drinks will be on sale as well as Hamburgers and Hotdogs. So come on out and support our surfers and have a great time!

On October 27th we will be having a sunset cruise on “Cool Runnings”. Cost is only $60 (cutters and drinks included). Space is limited so book your spot early by e-mailing BSA Secretary Margot Tuach at margot@tuach.com.

The good news for our young surfers is that we have Sprite on board for our Gromfest 2007. The event will now be held on October 20th at 9:00 am. Entries are Bds$25 and close at 8:30 am. The Divisions to be contested will be Under 16 Boys and Girls, Under 12 Boys and Girls (or combined depending on entries) and a Beginner’s Open. The winners will all receive medals and finalists in the Under-16 Divisions will also receive gift voucher prizes!! The venue is Long Beach. We will be providing tents for shade and music! So bring your picnic basket, family and friends for a day of fun and exciting surfing!
