Barbados Surfing Competition Jun. 26, 2007

The Barbados surfing Association is having an event on the 30th of June – 1st of July at Bathsheba in St. Joseph. The event will be held at Parlor which is east of soup bowl. The conditions are forecast to be windy but waves about 6ft. This event is the 3rd event in the surfer of the year challenge.

The break at parlor is big but very mushy and powerless at times, wave knowledge is going to play a vital role in the event and I don’t know many people who surf parlor that often so its anyone’s game really. This will be a very important event for those looking to make a good start to the year, and to keep up the momentum for those already doing well.

I know personally its going to be tough and no one is going to give you a break the competition seeing as Barbados is becoming more competitive, no more easy heats. I have realized this recently everyone entering wants it bad and this is being fueled by a few of our younger surfers. Its a pride thing you know I have seen the older generation guys dominate the sport for a while now and I realize it’s not about respect, it’s about competition .If you are busy respecting your competition and you are giving them waves in the heat they are going to kick your ass. You got get fired up and paddle like a mad man that’s the biggest part don’t get intimidated.

You know this crew of surfers have carried the flag for surfing in Barbados for like nearly 2 decades that shows some serious commitment and they are the ones who brought the surfing here to the level its at. Without them we would be no where near where we are today. And still they didn’t just throw in the towel they kept surfing dominating Barbados lineups and kicking my butt for years.

I have had kids pressuring me in heats lately I don’t like it but it’s good to see they want it. So the times are changing in Barbados surfing here comes the new school so be on the look out.
